The world is currently facing urgent challenges such as climate change and deepening inequalities. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a roadmap for a better future by 2030. Dr. Nidhi S. Menon, an Assistant Professor at the University of Technology Bahrain, believes that the arts – including dance, music, and theatre – have the potential to play a significant role in advancing this global mission.

Dance is described as the ultimate universal language by Dr. Menon. She believes that the grace and intensity of dance can break through cultural barriers and help make complex themes such as environmental crisis or cultural appreciation more understandable and moving. By incorporating sustainability into dance festivals, it becomes more than just entertainment – it becomes a call to action that challenges audiences to reflect and engage.

Music is also highlighted as a powerful tool for mobilization and transformation by Dr. Menon. She believes that a well-composed song about important issues such as gender equality or environmental stewardship can not only raise awareness but also inspire listeners to take action. Dr. Menon envisions concerts designed around the SDGs creating an atmosphere of unity and purpose, turning gatherings into movements for real change.

Theatre holds a special place for Dr. Menon, as it has the ability to bring abstract issues to life and make them real and relatable. Her recent directorial work, ‘Bhayaprasthav,’ focused on environmental degradation and the impact on biodiversity. Dr. Menon asserts that theatre can make audiences think and act, recognizing its potential to mobilize advocates in all communities.

As an accomplished academic, Dr. Menon believes that universities play a pivotal role in leveraging the arts to achieve the SDGs. By integrating the SDGs into academic programs, encouraging collaborations between artists and students, and conducting actionable research, universities can lead the way in sustainable innovation. Dr. Menon emphasizes the importance of preparing the next generation to be creative change-makers.

Dr. Menon’s vision for a sustainable future involves using art as a force for good. She believes that art is a catalyst for change and that by engaging and inspiring through the arts, the SDGs can be transformed from lofty aspirations into lived realities. She emphasizes the power of every artistic creation in sparking a movement towards sustainability and calls for creative action and inspiring ideas to drive a sustainable future.

In conclusion, Dr. Nidhi S. Menon’s perspective on the role of the arts in achieving the SDGs highlights the transformative power of dance, music, and theatre in addressing urgent global challenges. By using the arts to engage and inspire, she believes that we can turn aspirations into concrete actions and work towards a sustainable future driven by creativity and collaboration.
