The Norwich Crown Court in the UK has handed down a sentence to 24-year-old Elliott Gunton for his involvement in a Coinbase hack. Gunton accessed over 500 Coinbase accounts in 2018-2019, stealing more than $900,000. He and other hackers obtained access to accounts by redirecting online logins to a fake website and diverting phone calls to gain access to private accounts. Gunton had previously stolen personal data from TalkTalk customers and hacked Instagram accounts. Additionally, he was involved in a TalkTalk hack that resulted in the loss of thousands of pounds in cryptocurrency. Gunton was jailed in 2019 for hacking high-profile Instagram accounts and ordered to pay £407,359.

According to Judge Alice Robinson, Gunton’s offenses were highly sophisticated and involved significant planning and technical expertise. The judge noted that Gunton’s ultimate aim was to steal money, not just for the thrill of hacking. Gunton pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit fraud outside the UK and money laundering. His legal defense, Matthew McNiff, described Gunton as an “obsessive loner” who immersed himself in computer use. Gunton is taking steps to address his behavior and has started a furniture business to turn his life around.

Coinbase, a major crypto exchange, has been targeted by hackers multiple times in the past. In October 2021, hackers stole crypto from the accounts of at least 6,000 Coinbase users by bypassing the exchange’s two-factor authentication system. In another incident, a Coinbase customer reported losing $96,000 in a phone hack and sued the exchange after being told that the breach was his responsibility. These incidents highlight the importance of cybersecurity measures in protecting user funds on crypto exchanges.

The case of Elliott Gunton serves as a reminder of the risks associated with cryptocurrency hacking and the importance of strong security measures. Hackers continue to target crypto exchanges and users to steal funds, making it crucial for individuals to take steps to protect their accounts. Coinbase, like other exchanges, has been a target for hackers due to the potential for large financial gains. Users are urged to use strong passwords, enable two-factor authentication, and be cautious of phishing attempts to safeguard their funds.

The sentencing of Gunton reflects the serious consequences of engaging in cybercrime and defrauding individuals and businesses. The court’s decision to impose a jail sentence and order restitution underscores the severity of Gunton’s actions and the impact of his crimes on victims. Gunton’s case serves as a cautionary tale for others who may be tempted to engage in illegal activities online and emphasizes the importance of ethical behavior and respect for the law in the digital age. As the cryptocurrency market continues to grow, the need for robust security measures and accountability in the industry becomes increasingly critical.
