Bullying and harassment of teachers in schools is a prevalent issue that often goes unaddressed. Many teachers, like Kindergarten teacher Ruth, have experienced physical and verbal abuse from students. Ruth shared her experience of being insulted and physically attacked by students, highlighting the fear and challenges teachers face in their profession. The issue of bullying towards teachers is often overlooked, with school management siding with students and parents over teachers.

Psychologist Sangeeta Manglani acknowledges that bullying towards authoritative figures like teachers is not uncommon but is rarely reported due to fear of escalation. The UK-based Anti-bullying Alliance defines bullying as intentional hurting with an imbalance of power, which can manifest in physical, verbal, or emotional forms. Bullying of teachers is a universal problem, with cases reported in various countries, including the passing of laws to protect teachers from bullying parents in South Korea.

The most common bullying tactics towards teachers include defiance, incomplete homework, disruptive behavior, and false complaints. Teachers like Fatima have witnessed their colleagues being targeted by students and parents, resulting in emotional distress and disrespectful behavior. The support of school authorities is crucial in addressing and resolving bullying incidents. Psychologist Nikita Barretto explains that bullying behavior is often a call for help and a sign that the person needs support and guidance.

Teachers like Susan have faced challenging situations where students were disrespectful, threatening, and engaged in physical fights. Despite these negative experiences, most teachers find joy and fulfillment in their profession, attributing it to the opportunity to positively impact students’ lives. Understanding the root causes of bullying, such as unhealthy coping mechanisms and displacement of trauma, can help address and prevent such behavior in schools. Support systems and awareness are key in creating a safe and nurturing environment for both students and teachers.
