With summer approaching and the warm waters of the UAE attracting more beachgoers, it is important to be cautious of jellyfish stings. Jellyfish stings are not only painful but can also be life-threatening in severe cases. To aid in better handling jellyfish stings, a UK-based company has introduced Stingblade, a wearable product designed to safely remove jellyfish micro-barbs from the skin without activating them, reducing pain and preventing further stings.

Mark Dyer, the creator of Stingblade and a water sports enthusiast, developed the product after experiencing multiple jellyfish stings over the years. While swimming off the coast of Sicily in 2018, Dyer was stung approximately 20 times by jellyfish, prompting him to create a solution to help others deal with these painful encounters more effectively.

The Stingblade is a compact tool that can be worn around the arm like a blood pressure cuff. Made from recycled fishing nets sourced from England, the tool is designed to carefully scrape away jellyfish barbs without triggering the release of venom. Dyer’s mission extends beyond product creation, aiming to educate people on how to handle jellyfish stings properly and prevent further injury.

Common mistakes when dealing with jellyfish stings, such as rubbing the affected area or using cold water, can exacerbate the problem. Dyer advises against these practices and recommends using Stingblade to safely remove the barbs. The rise in jellyfish populations can be attributed to warmer waters and overfishing, which further limits the numbers of natural jellyfish predators, contributing to the increasing encounters with jellyfish in UAE waters.

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) regularly advises beachgoers to stay away from jellyfish and maintain a safe distance. With Abu Dhabi waters housing seven species of jellyfish, including the moon jellyfish and blue blubber jellyfish, precautions should be taken to prevent stings. Jellyfish use nematocysts in their tentacles to deliver venom, with symptoms ranging from mild discomfort to severe health issues.

Simmi Karia, the operations director for Stingblade, mentioned that they are promoting the product to hotels and diving centres across the UAE, expecting a high demand for this innovative solution to handle jellyfish stings effectively. It is important for swimmers and beachgoers to be aware of the dangers of jellyfish stings and to take precautionary measures while enjoying the beautiful waters of the UAE to avoid painful encounters with these sea creatures.
