UAE: Priests in BAPS Hindu temple celebrate Raksha Bandhan by tying rakhis to blue-collar workers

The BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi recently celebrated its first Raksha Bandhan festival since its official opening. The festival, which is a traditional Hindu celebration, honors the bond between sisters and brothers. To mark the occasion, the temple hosted a special program to honor blue-collar workers from across the UAE. About 2,500 visitors and workers were welcomed by priests and received sacred threads called rakhis that symbolize love and protection. Traditional devotional songs were performed during the ceremony.

Pujya Brahmavihari Swami, the head of the BAPS Hindu Mandir, explained the cultural significance of Raksha Bandhan and led prayers for the well-being of all workers and visitors in the UAE. Many workers expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the festival and be a part of the celebration. Visitors felt a sense of home and family despite being away from their loved ones. The atmosphere at the temple was joyful and festive, creating a memorable experience for everyone involved.

Workers from various parts of the UAE, such as Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah, shared their experiences of being part of the Raksha Bandhan celebration at the BAPS Hindu Mandir. They expressed their joy at receiving rakhis and being invited to participate in the festivities. The priests from the temple also visited workers’ camps at more than 16 companies to reach out to those who could not attend the ceremonies. They met with over a thousand workers, tying rakhis and offering prayers, spreading the message of love and unity.

The BAPS Hindu Mandir continues to be a spiritual oasis for global harmony, celebrating traditional festivals while also looking towards the future. The temple aims to create a welcoming environment for all community members, including blue-collar workers who play a vital role in the UAE. The festival of Raksha Bandhan provided an opportunity for workers to feel appreciated and included in the celebrations, reminding them of their families and loved ones back home.
