Artefactum Gallery, a Dubai-based art establishment, recently participated in the 21st Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (Adihex) where they showcased a variety of well-preserved wildlife animals available for purchase. Organized with the aim of promoting cultural exchange between nations, Adihex serves as a platform for enthusiasts of hunting, equestrian sports, and outdoor lifestyles. Running until September 8 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (Adnec), the exhibition features unique exhibits that celebrate human creativity and the beauty of the natural world.

Among the notable items on display at the Artefactum Gallery booth is a nine-foot Nile crocodile throne, crafted from a 15-foot crocodile hunted by the gallery owner in 2015. Valued at $100,000 or Dh367,000, the throne showcases the craftsmanship and artistry involved in preserving and showcasing wildlife animals. Other preserved animals available for purchase include a polar bear from Canada priced at Dh250,000, a Ussuri brown bear from Russia priced at Dh80,000, and a Grizzly bear skin rug priced at Dh40,000. Additionally, the gallery offers a variety of unique items such as a Tibetan yak head, a double-headed baby goat, and crafted meteorite souvenir items.

In adhering to strict regulations, Artefactum Gallery operates within the guidelines set by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and complies with cultural regulations regarding the trade of preserved wildlife. Taxidermy, the art of preserving dead animals by mounting or stuffing them to appear lifelike, is a meticulous process that requires skilled professionals to ensure the ethical handling of the animals. Khachaturova clarified that they work with professional hunters who understand the importance of ethical hunting practices to preserve wildlife in a respectful manner.

Preserving wildlife animals serves as a tribute to the historic concept of ‘cabinet de curiosités’ from the 17th century, where curators would collect various items reflecting art, science, and culture of the time. By providing a unique and immersive experience that highlights human creativity and the connection to the natural world, Artefactum Gallery aims to showcase the beauty and wonder of preserved wildlife. Their exhibits offer a glimpse into the intricate process of taxidermy and the artistry involved in preserving animals for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.

Artefactum Gallery’s participation in Adihex presents a rare opportunity for visitors to explore and acquire unique pieces that celebrate the art of taxidermy and preservation of wildlife. By showcasing a diverse range of preserved animals and unique items, the gallery aims to create awareness and appreciation for the craftsmanship and artistry involved in preserving natural wonders. As a platform for cultural exchange and celebration of hunting and equestrian sports, Adihex continues to attract enthusiasts and collectors looking to experience the beauty and creativity of the natural world through preserved wildlife exhibits.
