Billionaire Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov was arrested at Bourget airport outside Paris on Saturday, as reported by local media outlets. The investigation against Durov revolves around the lack of moderators on Telegram, with police believing that this has enabled criminal activity to persist unchecked on the messaging platform. Durov has faced constant troubles from authorities around the world, particularly from Russia and the United States. The messaging platform has a reputation for strong encryption, and Durov has consistently rejected requests from governments to provide a back key for investigation purposes.

The news of Durov’s arrest in France led to a significant drop in the Telegram linked TON token, which plunged as much as 17% initially. At the time of writing, TON is trading at just above $5.83, down 14% in the last few hours. Elon Musk expressed his support for Durov on social media, highlighting the importance of the First Amendment’s free speech protections in the United States. Musk jokingly mentioned, “It’s 2030 in Europe, and people are getting executed for liking memes.” He also referenced reports that Durov could be facing a prison sentence of up to 20 years.

The team behind the TON blockchain reassured the community about the platform’s stability following Durov’s arrest. They posted on X stating that Ton remains fully operational and that the TON community is strong and fully operational. They emphasized their commitment to freedom of speech and decentralization, standing firmly in support of these principles. The statement aimed to ease concerns within the community about the platform’s future in light of Durov’s arrest.

The arrest of Pavel Durov raises questions about the future of Telegram and its associated TON token, as well as the broader implications for free speech and encryption within messaging platforms. Durov’s resistance to government demands for access to user data and encryption keys has been a central tenet of his approach to privacy and security on Telegram. The support from figures like Elon Musk reflects a broader concern for individual rights and freedoms in the face of increasing government surveillance and control over online communications.

As the situation with Durov unfolds, it will be important to monitor developments within the TON community and the broader cryptocurrency space. The response from users and investors to Durov’s arrest and its impact on the TON token’s value will provide insights into the resilience of the platform and the community’s commitment to its ideals. Cryptonews will continue to cover the story as it develops, providing readers with up-to-date information and analysis on the implications of Durov’s arrest for the crypto industry and the future of privacy and security in digital communication platforms.
