The British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, confirmed that he is not under investigation by the Gambling Commission amidst a controversy surrounding bets placed on the date of the upcoming general election. Sunak also announced that the Conservative Party will be conducting its own internal investigation into the alleged betting scandal that has overshadowed their campaign for reelection. The party’s chief data officer, Nick Mason, took a leave of absence following allegations that party members used inside information to place bets on the election date before it was announced.

The betting scandal originated from reports by The Sunday Times and other sources, citing that several Conservative officials, including election candidates Laura Saunders and Craig Williams, are under investigation for allegedly betting on the timing of the election. Tony Lee, the Conservative director of campaigning and Saunders’ husband, has also taken a leave of absence in connection with the scandal. The growing controversy has led to the arrest of one of Sunak’s police bodyguards on suspicion of misconduct.

Sunak expressed his anger over the allegations and emphasized that anyone found to have broken the law should be expelled from the party. The controversy unfolded after Sunak unexpectedly announced that parliamentary elections would be held on July 4th, catching many by surprise due to the secrecy surrounding the date. Williams, Sunak’s parliamentary private secretary, admitted to being investigated for placing a bet on the election date before it was officially announced.

Senior Conservative minister Michael Gove condemned the alleged betting, drawing parallels to the “Partygate” scandal that contributed to former Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s downfall in 2022. Gove highlighted the potential damage to public trust in the Conservative Party, echoing sentiments from the Liberal Democrats’ deputy leader, Daisy Cooper, who called for an official inquiry into the scandal. The controversy has further intensified the political landscape just days before the general election, with the Conservatives facing heightened scrutiny over the integrity of their campaign.

The Gambling Commission’s investigation into the betting scandal continues, with multiple Conservative officials under scrutiny for their involvement in placing bets on the election date. The allegations have sparked outrage among political leaders and the public, with calls for transparency and accountability within the party. Sunak’s handling of the situation, including the internal investigation and assurances of action against wrongdoers, will be crucial in restoring trust in the Conservative Party and mitigating the impact of the scandal on their election prospects. As the controversy unfolds, all eyes are on Sunak and Conservative leaders to address the issue and uphold the integrity of the political process.
