Jamie Smith made headlines with his unbeaten 72 runs that helped England gain a 23-run lead over Sri Lanka on day two of the opening Test at Old Trafford. With only 57 overs being bowled due to bad light and rain, Smith’s innings, along with Harry Brook’s 56, propelled England closer to Sri Lanka’s first innings total. The hosts were at 259-6 when play was halted.

The day started with Sri Lanka utilizing the cloudy conditions in Manchester to their advantage, picking up three wickets in the first hour. Asitha Fernando made early breakthroughs by dismissing Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope, while Vishwa Fernando removed Dan Lawrence. Despite the setbacks, Joe Root and Brook put up a 58-run partnership before Asitha struck again to dismiss Root.

Brook continued to anchor England’s innings with a positive approach, maintaining a healthy strike rate. Jamie Smith also contributed with his aggressive batting, hitting four boundaries and showcasing his potential with a debut fifty. The duo built a crucial partnership of 51 runs before Brook was bowled by Jayasuriya. Chris Woakes also fell victim to Jayasuriya’s spin.

Smith, however, continued his impressive form by scoring his third fifty in four tests since his debut. Despite his efforts, play was abandoned after England faced 61 overs as umpires deemed it unsafe for Sri Lanka to bowl their fast bowlers in fading light. The match balance is still in favor of England, with Smith’s innings offering hope for a commanding lead in the next innings.

In summary, Jamie Smith’s innings was the highlight of day two, with his unbeaten 72 providing England with a lead over Sri Lanka. The day saw crucial partnerships between England’s batsmen, including Harry Brook, Joe Root, and Chris Woakes. Sri Lanka’s bowlers capitalized on the cloudy conditions, but Smith’s aggression and Brook’s stability helped England stay ahead. The match is finely poised heading into the next innings, with England holding the advantage after a rain-affected day at Old Trafford.
