The Shura Council of Doha, Qatar recently participated in a parliamentary event organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union via videoconferencing to mark the International Day of Democracy and the International Day of Peace, which fall on September 15 and 21 of each year. Represented by HE Issa bin Arar Al Rumaihi, member of the Council, the event focused on the topic of democratic peace in the midst of the escalation of numerous wars worldwide in 2024. Discussions also revolved around the role of democracy in attaining peace and diminishing armed conflicts, as well as how the perspectives of human security and common security can pave the way for new paths to peace.

The event served as a platform for various parliamentary bodies to come together and discuss the importance of democracy in fostering peace and stability on a global scale. With the ongoing escalation of conflicts in different parts of the world, the need for democratic values and principles to guide international relations has become increasingly evident. By highlighting the role of democracy in achieving peace, the event aimed to shed light on how nations can work together towards conflict resolution and the promotion of human security.
Moreover, by emphasizing the concept of democratic peace, the event aimed to underscore the significance of democratic governance in reducing armed conflicts and promoting stability. With the world facing numerous challenges and threats to peace and security, the role of democratic institutions in upholding peace and stability cannot be overstated. Through dialogue and collaboration, parliamentary bodies can play a crucial role in advancing democratic values and principles and fostering a culture of peace and cooperation at the international level.

The event also provided an opportunity for participants to explore new pathways towards peace, particularly through the lens of human security and common security. By considering the perspectives of human security and common security, participants were able to envision alternative approaches to conflict resolution and peacebuilding. By reimagining security in terms of the well-being and safety of individuals and communities, rather than just national interests, new possibilities for peace emerge. Through a collective focus on human security and common security, nations can work together to address the root causes of conflict and promote sustainable peace.

In conclusion, the participation of the Shura Council in the parliamentary event organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union underscores Qatar’s commitment to promoting democracy, peace, and security on the global stage. By engaging in discussions on the role of democracy in achieving peace and reducing armed conflicts, the Council demonstrated its dedication to upholding democratic values and principles. Through dialogue and collaboration with other parliamentary bodies, Qatar seeks to contribute to the advancement of democratic governance and the promotion of peace and stability worldwide. As the world continues to grapple with complex challenges and threats to peace, events like these serve as important platforms for fostering understanding, cooperation, and solidarity among nations in the pursuit of a more peaceful and secure world.
