Saudi Astronomy Team made history by participating in the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA2024) in Brazil. The team, consisting of students from various education departments in Saudi Arabia, underwent extensive training programs facilitated by the Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) and the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba). This initiative reflects CST’s commitment to nurturing national talent and encouraging students to excel in the Space sector on a global platform.

The Saudi Astronomy Team members, Jude Basem Al-Luhyani, Fajr Hassan Al-Obaidan, and Hussein Hassan Al-Mubarak, dedicated approximately 590 hours to training in preparation for the IOAA2024. CST’s collaboration with Mawhiba focused on equipping the team with the necessary skills in astronomical observation, celestial mechanics, astrophysics, and cosmology. This initiative underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to staying abreast of rapid advancements in Space and capitalizing on emerging opportunities in the industry.

Over the past year, CST and Mawhiba have collaborated on several educational and training programs to prepare the Saudi Astronomy Team for the IOAA2024. Through these initiatives, CST aims to equip national cadres with the skills and knowledge required to succeed in the evolving Space sector. By investing in the training and development of young talents, Saudi Arabia is positioning itself as a key player in the global Space industry and fostering a culture of innovation and excellence among its youth.

The Saudi Astronomy Team’s participation in the IOAA2024 marks a significant milestone in Saudi Arabia’s journey towards becoming a leader in the Space industry. By empowering students to pursue careers in Space and related fields, CST is laying the foundation for a strong and competitive workforce in the sector. Through collaborations with organizations like Mawhiba, CST is able to provide students with the necessary resources and support to excel in international competitions and contribute to the advancement of Space science and technology.

In conclusion, the Saudi Astronomy Team’s participation in the IOAA2024 demonstrates Saudi Arabia’s commitment to nurturing talent in the Space sector and encouraging students to pursue careers in astronomy and astrophysics.
