Saudi Arabia’s cinema industry has seen a significant increase in revenues from ticket sales in the first half of 2024. According to the Saudi Film Commission, revenues from ticket sales amounted to SR421.8 million ($112.4 million) during this period, with approximately 8.5 million cinema tickets sold. This growth can be attributed to reduced ticket prices and government incentives aimed at boosting activity within the industry.

In an effort to further develop the cinema sector, the six companies that operate cinemas in Saudi Arabia have lowered ticket prices. Currently, ticket prices range between SR50 and SR55 (about $14), down from approximately SR85. Despite this reduction, ticket prices in Saudi Arabia are still higher than those in other Gulf countries, where prices range between $9 in Oman and $12 in Qatar. The Saudi Film Commission has stated that Saudi Arabia has maintained its position as the leading country in the Middle East for annual revenue since 2020.

Saudi Arabia has ambitious goals for its cinema industry, including exceeding $1 billion in annual box office revenues, producing 70 local films per year, and increasing the number of cinemas to 350 with 2,500 cinema screens by 2030. It is projected that by 2030, the cinema industry will contribute about $24 billion to the economy and create more than 30,000 permanent jobs. The country also aims to increase the screening of Saudi films, with 11 Saudi films being shown in cinemas in the first half of the year.

The month of June, which marks the end of the school year and the beginning of the summer season, was the best-selling month for cinemas in Saudi Arabia, generating revenue of about SR141 million. In terms of international films, “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” starring Will Smith, was the highest-grossing film at the Saudi box office, earning SR66.8 million ($17.8 million). Saudi Arabia’s cinema industry is thriving, with a strong focus on both local and international films to attract audiences and increase box office revenues.

Overall, the cinema industry in Saudi Arabia is experiencing significant growth, with increased revenues from ticket sales and a focus on expanding the number of cinemas and local film productions. The reduction in ticket prices and government incentives have contributed to this growth, making cinema more accessible to audiences. With ambitious goals set for the future, Saudi Arabia aims to become a leading player in the global cinema industry, contributing significantly to the economy and creating job opportunities for its citizens. As the industry continues to evolve, the Saudi cinema sector is poised for further success in the years to come.
