Saudi Arabia has taken a historic step by reopening its embassy in the Syrian capital Damascus after being closed for 12 years since the beginning of the Syrian crisis. The announcement was made by Abdullah Al-Harees, acting Saudi Chargé d’Affaires in Syria, during a ceremony attended by Syrian ministers, officials, and members of the diplomatic corps. Al-Harees emphasized the importance of this day in strengthening relations between the two countries and expressed the embassy’s commitment to enhancing bilateral ties.

Syrian Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Deputy Minister Ayman Raad highlighted that the reopening of the embassy will activate relations between Saudi Arabia and Syria, contributing to joint Arab action to benefit the people of the region. Dr. Riad Abbas, Director of Arab Affairs Department at the Ministry, stated that resuming the embassy’s operations signifies the beginning of a new phase of collaboration for the prosperity and stability of Syria and other Arab countries.

The resumption of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Syria began earlier this year with the appointment of Faisal bin Saud Al-Mujfel as the Saudi ambassador to Syria. This marked the first time a Saudi ambassador was appointed since the closure of the embassy in 2012. In return, Syria appointed Dr. Muhammad Soussan as its new ambassador to Saudi Arabia in January. The decision to reopen diplomatic missions was announced in October following Syria’s return to the Arab League and the resumption of regular commercial flights between the two countries.

The reopening of the Saudi embassy in Damascus signifies a significant milestone in the history of relations between Saudi Arabia and Syria. This move is expected to enhance cooperation and strengthen ties between the two nations, contributing to regional stability and prosperity. The ceremony marking the official opening of the embassy was attended by high-ranking officials from both countries, reflecting the mutual commitment to advancing bilateral relations and promoting joint Arab action.

As Saudi Arabia and Syria reestablish diplomatic ties, there is hope for increased collaboration on various fronts, including political, economic, and cultural exchanges. The reopening of the embassy is a positive development that will pave the way for further engagement between the two countries, benefiting the people of both nations and the wider region. Both governments have expressed their commitment to working together towards common goals and fostering a relationship based on mutual respect and cooperation.

In conclusion, the reopening of the Saudi embassy in Damascus symbolizes a new chapter in the relations between Saudi Arabia and Syria, with a focus on mutual understanding and cooperation. The resumption of diplomatic ties between the two countries is a significant step towards building trust and promoting peace and stability in the region. The ceremony marking this historic event underscores the commitment of both nations to strengthening their partnership and working together towards shared goals. It is a positive development that heralds a brighter future for Saudi-Syrian relations and the region as a whole.
