Saudi Arabia has been elected as the president of the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) for a three-year term, starting in 2025. This decision was made during the 38th meeting of the initiative, which took place in Jeddah from September 9-12, 2024. The CEO of the General Organization for the Conservation of Coral Reefs and Turtles in the Red Sea (Shams), Dr. Khaled Isfahani, expressed that Saudi Arabia’s selection to lead the 14th session of the initiative underscores the recognition of the Kingdom’s technical abilities and efforts in coral reef conservation. The announcement also demonstrates the confidence of member states in Saudi Arabia’s ability to host significant global events and contribute to the preservation of marine environments, biodiversity, and ecosystems.

Dr. Isfahani emphasized that assuming the presidency of the initiative further strengthens Saudi Arabia’s commitment to protecting coral reefs at local, regional, and international levels.
