The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) and the National Archives UK have recently signed a partnership agreement to work together in preserving cultural heritage, promoting international cooperation, and contributing to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. The National Archives will collaborate with the RCU in various areas such as training, archival research, public programming, and digitization. The partnership aims to enhance cultural heritage research and public programming through joint research projects, digital archive initiatives, and cultural exhibitions.

Abeer Al Akel, Acting Chief Executive Officer at RCU, emphasized the importance of the comprehensive regeneration campaign that is currently underway in AlUla, transforming the region into a global hub for heritage and culture. This partnership with The National Archives is seen as a way to boost Saudi culture and promote initiatives that are ‘powered by the past, reimagined for the future’. The collaboration between Saudi Arabia and the UK is expected to combine expertise and resources to achieve these goals.

The CEO and Curator of the National Archives, Saul Nasi, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with the RCU, highlighting the opportunity to share their expertise in documenting and protecting heritage. The National Archives is known for being the official archive and publisher for the UK government, with a vast collection of national documents spanning over 1,000 years. The collaboration with the RCU will allow them to contribute their insights and expertise to the preservation of the rich stories of Northwest Arabia.

The National Archives is now part of RCU’s network of partners dedicated to safeguarding AlUla’s documentary heritage. Other partners include King Abdulaziz Public Library (Darah) and the King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives. These organizations work together to collect, restore, and organize documents, photos, and videos from the local community, providing a glimpse into the region’s history. The addition of The National Archives to this network further strengthens the efforts to preserve AlUla’s cultural heritage for future generations.

The strategic objectives of the partnership between the RCU and The National Archives align with the goals of Vision 2030, the Saudi government’s ambitious plan to diversify the economy and promote cultural heritage. By leveraging the expertise of The National Archives in archive management and historical documentation, the collaboration aims to enhance research and public programming related to AlUla’s cultural heritage. The partnership reflects the commitment of both countries to international cooperation and the preservation of cultural heritage.

Overall, the partnership between the RCU and The National Archives UK represents a significant step towards achieving the goals of preserving cultural heritage, supporting international cooperation, and contributing to Vision 2030. Through joint research projects, digital archive initiatives, and cultural exhibitions, this collaboration promises to enhance the understanding and appreciation of AlUla’s rich history and cultural significance. By bringing together expertise and resources from Saudi Arabia and the UK, the partnership demonstrates the power of international collaboration in promoting cultural heritage and preserving it for future generations.
