The Qatar Research Development and Innovation (QRDI) Council, in collaboration with the Association of European Science and Technology Transfer Professionals (ASTP), recently concluded their first training session in Doha, Qatar. The training was part of the Mumaken IP and Technology Transfer track, organized to enhance the skills of IP managers and champions in intellectual property management and technology transfer. The sessions took place from September 24 to 26, 2024, at the Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP).

Nejoud Al Jehani, Senior Director Policy Planning and Evaluation at the QRDI Council, emphasized the importance of the Mumaken program in cultivating Qatar’s Research, Development, and Innovation (RDI) ecosystem in alignment with the Qatar National Vision 2030. The program aims to equip participants with the necessary skills to promote innovation across Qatar and establish the country as a global hub for innovation and talent. The Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Track of the Mumaken program, led by ASTP, plays a crucial role in driving economic and social benefits from Qatar’s research base.

Dr. Jeff Skinner, past President of ASTP, expressed his pleasure in being a key partner in the Mumaken program, highlighting Qatar’s effort to become a leader in deriving benefits from research. The training sessions focused on equipping participants with knowledge essential for mastering the complexities of intellectual property and commercialization. Participants engaged in various activities and discussions, including a licensing simulation and negotiation role-play, to deepen their understanding and gain practical skills for their professional endeavors.

The Mumaken program is designed to provide RDI policymakers and individuals within RDI-supporting entities with essential knowledge and skills to create an enabling environment for RDI and drive innovation in Qatar. The Intellectual Property (IP) training included in Track A aims to offer participants an in-depth understanding of IP management and technology transfer mechanisms. By offering a comprehensive exploration of IP fundamentals and practical experiences through hands-on activities, the program ensures that participants depart with both theoretical insights and practical skills necessary for their professional growth. Through training sessions like these, Qatar is positioning itself as a global hub for innovation and talent in the field of research and development.
