The Qatar Research, Development, and Innovation Council (QRDI) has launched a call for its new flagship program, Qatar Open Innovation (QOI), in collaboration with AJ+, a digital news platform under the Al Jazeera Media Network. AJ+ is seeking proposals to revolutionize the translation and adaptation of video content using Artificial Intelligence to streamline the process and make news stories more accessible to a global audience. The deadline for proposal submissions is 30 October 2024.

Dr Abdelhak Belaidi, Program Manager at QRDI Council, stated that this opportunity aligns with the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the QRDI 2030 Strategy, which focuses on digital technology as a national priority. AJ+ aims to use ethical AI to provide smart tools that use machine learning to adapt news stories in a timely manner, solidifying Qatar’s position as a global hub for Research, Development, and Innovation (RDI).

Alba Mora, Executive Producer at AJ+, highlighted the importance of timeliness in the fast-paced world of news. By collaborating with QRDI, AJ+ seeks to create the next generation of content adaptations that go beyond simple translation to meet strategic goals of being widely available in the media landscape, investing in AI, and fostering a culture of innovation. The goal is to create custom-built tools that integrate seamlessly into the workflow and improve audience reach and engagement.

AJ+ is looking for an innovative smart translation tool that leverages ethical AI to automate and streamline the translation and adaptation processes. Currently manual and labor-intensive, these processes are inefficient and prone to errors. By integrating proposed solutions within Adobe Premiere Pro, the aim is to reduce creation time and ensure user data privacy, transparency, security, and ethical standards are met in all processes.

With millions of followers on social media, AJ+ has become a key player in the digital news landscape by offering short-form video news content in multiple languages. The objective is to create a seamless workflow that removes language barriers and delivers timely and relevant content to a diverse international audience. Selected proposals will work with QRDI Council and AJ+ to implement solutions compliant with Al Jazeera’s data privacy protocols and regulations.

The Qatar Open Innovation program provides startups and innovators with a platform to collaborate with potential government and corporate buyers to address the nation’s challenges in priority areas such as energy, health, resource sustainability, society, and digital technology. By identifying opportunities for innovation collaborations, the program aims to drive economic prosperity and support Qatar’s vision for a more technologically advanced future.
