Qatar’s recent accession to the Madrid Protocol, marking its official entry into force on August 3, 2024, is a significant milestone for the country. The Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations at Geneva, H E Dr. Hend bint Abdulrahman Al Muftah, highlighted the importance of this accession at the official celebration organized by the Office of the State of Qatar to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and other economic organizations at the headquarters of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva. This move reflects Qatar’s strong commitment to aligning with international standards in intellectual property (IP) and innovation systems, ultimately contributing to enhancing its participation in the global system for the protection of intellectual property.

Furthermore, Qatar’s accession to the Madrid Protocol is in line with the ambitious goals set forth in Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Third National Development Strategy for 2024-2030. These visions prioritize human development, knowledge-based innovation, and economic diversification as key components of the country’s national development strategy. The Permanent Representative highlighted the importance of prioritizing IP and knowledge-based economy as cornerstones of Qatar’s national goals, emphasizing the country’s commitment to strengthening its legal and economic frameworks through this accession.

In addition, H E Dr. Hend bint Abdulrahman Al Muftah emphasized the words of Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani during the Fourth Edition of Qatar Economic Forum last May. The Prime Minister highlighted Qatar’s dedication to creating new investment opportunities and aiming to be amongst the top 10 countries for investment and business establishment. This underscores the country’s efforts to attract investment and drive economic growth, underscoring the significance of Qatar’s accession to the Madrid Protocol in this context.

Overall, Qatar’s accession to the Madrid Protocol marks a significant step towards enhancing the country’s participation in the global system for the protection of intellectual property. This move aligns with Qatar’s commitment to international standards in IP and innovation systems, reflecting its dedication to strengthening its legal and economic frameworks. Through prioritizing IP and knowledge-based economy as essential components of its national development strategy, Qatar is positioning itself for continued growth and success in the global marketplace.
