Qatar Calls for International Support Against Israeli Practices

In a statement delivered by HE Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, the Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, Qatar called on all countries and international organizations to not recognize or provide support to illegal Israeli practices. The State of Qatar welcomed the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), stating that it reflects the important provisions of international law that should be respected. The statement was made before the General Assembly 10th Emergency Special Session Draft resolution, discussing the legal consequences of Israel’s policies and practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including East Jerusalem.

HE Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani reiterated Qatar’s support for the ICJ’s advisory opinion, emphasizing that Israel is obligated to end its illegal presence in the occupied Palestinian territory and East Jerusalem. She highlighted that the court’s opinion covers the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip, considering them as a single territorial unit whose integrity and respect must be preserved. Qatar is committed to supporting the position of the court and called on all countries to activate the opinion immediately and unconditionally. The State of Qatar considers supporting the Palestinian draft resolution as a humanitarian, moral, and legal duty, urging all countries to work towards implementing the ICJ’s opinion promptly.

The resumption of the 10th emergency special session was welcomed by HE Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, stating that the session will discuss the draft resolution submitted by the State of Palestine on the ICJ’s advisory opinion regarding Israeli policies and practices. The draft resolution aims to address the United Nations, including the General Assembly, to consider specific procedures and methods to end the occupation as soon as possible. Qatar believes that this draft resolution is necessary, especially given the deteriorating situation of the Palestinian people and the historical responsibility of the United Nations towards the Palestinian cause. Qatar congratulated the State of Palestine for obtaining the right to submit resolutions to the UN and hopes this will lead to full membership based on the criteria outlined in the UN Charter.

As the meeting took place, Israeli aggression against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip continued, resulting in numerous civilian casualties. HE Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani highlighted the ongoing mediation efforts of Qatar in partnership with Egypt and the United States to reach a ceasefire in Gaza. Qatar hopes for the release of prisoners and detainees, the continuous delivery of humanitarian aid, and the protection of civilians. The aim is to pave the way for a comprehensive and just political solution to the conflict in line with the ICJ’s advisory opinion and the Palestinian draft resolution. Qatar reaffirmed its unwavering support for the Palestinian cause and the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including the recognition of the State of Palestine within the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

In conclusion, Qatar’s call for international support against illegal Israeli practices and its commitment to the ICJ’s advisory opinion demonstrates its dedication to upholding international law and supporting the Palestinian people. The ongoing mediation efforts in Gaza reflect Qatar’s desire for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and the protection of civilians. Qatar’s stance on the Palestinian cause and the rights of the Palestinian people remains steadfast, with a focus on achieving justice and a just political solution in accordance with international law and UN resolutions. As Qatar continues to advocate for the rights of the Palestinian people at the United Nations, it hopes to see progress towards a lasting peace in the region.
