Qatar leads meeting of GCC Standing Committee on Wildlife and Natural Habitats Conservation

Officials from GCC countries gathered in Doha for the 21st meeting of the Standing Committee of the Convention on the Conservation of Wildlife and Natural Habitats. The meeting, organized by the GCC General Secretariat, was chaired by Mohammed Ahmed Al Khanji from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in Qatar. The purpose of the meeting was to prepare for the upcoming meeting of Ministers responsible for environmental affairs across the GCC nations.

During the meeting, key topics were discussed including the GCC Supreme Council’s directives on environmental policies, revisions to the Convention on the Conservation of Wildlife, and the strategic plan of the Committee of Ministers Responsible for Environmental Affairs. Additionally, international agreements such as CITES and the Convention on Biological Diversity were addressed. Important matters like the transfer of falcon ownership, wildlife security and protection, the Gulf Conference on Wildlife, and Gulf Wildlife Day were also on the agenda.

The upcoming Gulf Wildlife Day will include workshops, training programs, and discussions on managing ecological systems in the region. The meeting also covered the Supreme Council’s decision on non-customs restrictions related to wildlife. The representatives from GCC countries proposed recommendations which will be further considered by the Undersecretaries Committee before being presented to the Ministerial Committee responsible for environmental affairs at their next meeting.

Overall, the meeting served as a platform for officials from GCC countries to discuss and collaborate on important environmental issues and initiatives.
