Qatar is prioritizing cybersecurity to keep up with the ever-evolving threat landscape and ensure a safe digital environment. Alya Al Kuwari from the National Cyber Security Agency shared insights on protection from cyber threats, emphasizing that cybersecurity is relevant to everyone, not just experts. It encompasses a range of measures to safeguard systems, networks, and data, with a focus on ensuring safety and confidentiality.

The country has achieved recognition for its cybersecurity efforts, ranking among the top countries in the Global Cybersecurity Index. Qatar’s National Cybersecurity Strategy aims to align with the Qatar National Vision 2030, positioning the country as a leader in safe technology adoption. Key areas of focus include network security, infrastructure protection, cloud security, IoT security, and information security.

Al Kuwari highlighted the importance of network security in safeguarding critical institutions and infrastructure, particularly during high-profile events like the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. She emphasized the need for robust security measures to prevent unauthorized access and data theft. Cloud security and IoT security were also identified as crucial components of a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy.

The rise in cyberattacks, particularly phishing and cyber fraud crimes, underscores the importance of user awareness and proactive security measures. Al Kuwari noted that user awareness is a critical aspect of cybersecurity, with phishing and cyber fraud crimes quadrupling in just five years due to a lack of awareness. Staying informed about the latest risks and threats is essential in combating cyber risks.

To combat cyber risks, Al Kuwari recommended downloading reliable antivirus software, using strong and unique passwords, and enabling two-factor authentication whenever possible. She emphasized that cybersecurity is a national duty, as individuals’ lack of awareness not only puts themselves at risk but also impacts their community and country. Continuous education and vigilance are key in protecting against cyber threats and ensuring a safe digital environment.
