Bahrain is paving the way for comprehensive AI regulation through a proposed law aimed at establishing a legal framework for the emerging technology. Ali Al Shahabi, a member of the Shura Council, highlighted the importance of this legislation in a recent interview, emphasizing the need for countries to have effective AI regulations to attract companies and talent. The proposed law advocates for the creation of a dedicated unit to oversee AI development, protect investors, and ensure the safety of individuals. It also addresses concerns about the impact of AI on the workforce, reassuring the public that AI will not replace human workers entirely but will instead transform job roles and processes.

The proposed law also focuses on continuous skill development to adapt to the changing landscape and leverage AI to enhance services, efficiency, and productivity. It emphasizes the importance of human involvement in decision-making and prohibits AI from replacing humans in critical areas. The law also includes measures to monitor AI developers and programmers to prevent the development of harmful technologies, with a dedicated AI unit tasked with investigating violations and enforcing regulations. Additionally, it aims to protect children from online dangers by utilizing AI to filter harmful content and detect suspicious behavior.

Key features of the proposed law include regulating AI technologies, protecting privacy, preserving human rights, encouraging innovation, prohibiting harmful AI applications, safeguarding human roles, monitoring and oversight, and protecting children. Al Shahabi believes that Bahrain is well-positioned to leverage AI for advancements in various sectors such as finance, banking, logistics, transportation, healthcare, cybersecurity, tourism, and government services. By implementing comprehensive AI regulations, Bahrain aims to create a favorable environment for developers, companies, and investors to innovate and thrive in the AI sector.

In conclusion, Bahrain’s proactive approach to regulating AI through the proposed law demonstrates its commitment to establishing a robust legal framework for the responsible development and deployment of AI technologies. By addressing concerns about the impact of AI on the workforce, protecting human roles, and ensuring the safety of individuals, Bahrain is positioning itself as a leader in AI regulation. Through continuous monitoring and oversight, the proposed law aims to prevent the development of harmful technologies while utilizing AI to create a safer online environment for children. With a focus on innovation and advancement across various sectors, Bahrain is poised to leverage AI for transformative changes that benefit its economy and society.
