World Teachers’ Day was recently celebrated in Qatar, with Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani attending the event. The Ministry of Education and Higher Education organized the celebration under the theme “Teachers’ Day: A Gift that Reaps Generations” at the Ministry’s headquarters in Luqtaifiya. During the event, 27 teachers were honored for their dedication and commitment to preparing future generations throughout their professional careers spanning over twenty years. The celebration was attended by dignitaries, educational figures, school principals, teachers, parents, students, and local media representatives.

Minister of Education and Higher Education H E Buthaina bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi expressed her pride in celebrating World Teachers’ Day, highlighting the importance of teachers in achieving the goals of Qatar’s national vision. She emphasized the vital role teachers play in shaping promising generations and building the educational foundation of society. The Minister thanked teachers for their efforts in nurturing children, inspiring students, and contributing to the country’s development and progress. She announced a strategic project aiming to promote the teaching profession among Qataris under the slogan “The Future of Our Children is in Your Hands,” as part of investing in national capacities.

In her speech, Minister Al Nuaimi discussed the Ministry’s efforts to support teachers through various programs like “Khebrat,” “Tameen,” and “Bidaya Muwafaqa.” These programs focus on enhancing teachers’ capabilities and aligning with Qatar’s National Vision 2030 and the Third National Development Strategy. The Minister highlighted the launch of the second edition of the “Khebrat” program, expanding into new specializations to develop teachers’ skills in technical and vocational education, business administration, and information technology. Moreover, she mentioned the “Tamkeen” pathway under the “Tameen” program to qualify administrators for the teaching profession.

The Ministry is also focused on recruiting and retaining exceptional teachers and motivating Qatari youth to pursue teaching specializations through university education. This year, an increase in the number of Qatari students joining the “Tomouh” scholarship program was noted, particularly among male students. The aim is to attract national talents to the teaching profession and ensure a high caliber of educators in Qatar. The celebration of World Teachers’ Day included various segments like a video presentation titled “Your Journey as a Teacher” and student contributions expressing gratitude towards teachers who have inspired them.

World Teachers’ Day, observed on October 5 each year, marks the adoption of the 1966 Unesco/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. This recommendation addresses teachers’ rights, responsibilities, professional concerns, and the challenges they face globally. The theme for this year’s celebration underscores the importance of valuing teachers’ knowledge, voice, and their involvement in educational decision-making. The event in Qatar highlighted the significant contributions of teachers in shaping future generations and emphasized the support and recognition they receive from the government and society.
