Local fish markets in Bahrain have recently seen a positive change in both prices and quantities of fish, after facing high prices and scarcity for some time. A survey conducted by Al Ayam newspaper revealed that imported fish such as sea bass, snapper, salmon, and kingfish are in high demand due to their readily available supply. Despite limited quantities, locally sourced fish like safi and Kurkufan are also available, with some days offering a wider variety including hamoor and sha’ari. Bahraini shrimp remains a consistent favorite among buyers.

According to Abu Hamed, a vendor at the Damistan market, prices have now stabilized after a sharp increase during the peak of last summer. For example, Bahraini safi fish is currently priced between BD2 to BD2.5 per kilogram for smaller sizes and BD4 to BD6 per kilogram for medium sizes. There is anticipation for an increase in the supply of kingfish in the market as a seasonal ban on kingfish fishing is expected to be lifted soon by the Supreme Council for the Environment.

The stabilization in prices and increase in fish quantities is a welcome relief for both vendors and buyers at the local fish markets. The availability of a wide variety of fish, both imported and locally sourced, ensures that customers have options to choose from based on their preferences and budget. Bahraini shrimp, in particular, continues to be a popular choice among consumers, highlighting the demand for local seafood products. Vendors like Abu Hamed are optimistic about the market’s future and expect a greater availability of fish, especially with the lifting of the seasonal ban on kingfish fishing.

As the market gears up for an increase in the supply of kingfish following the anticipated lifting of the seasonal fishing ban, vendors are hopeful for a boost in sales and a wider range of options for customers. The stability in prices, along with the availability of a variety of fish, indicates a positive trend in the local fish market in Bahrain. Customers can now enjoy a wider selection of fish at reasonable prices, catering to their diverse tastes and preferences. With the demand for imported fish like sea bass and salmon, as well as the popularity of Bahraini shrimp, the local fish market is expected to remain vibrant and thriving in the coming period.
