Oman Sail recently organized a beach clean-up operation at Al Mussanah Public Beach in Muscat to mark UN World Clean Up Day. The initiative was aimed at preserving the environment and keeping the nation’s beaches clean. A team of 60 volunteers from various organizations and the local community participated in the event, removing a total of 47 full black sacks of waste from the beach. Among the most common items found were plastic water and soft drink bottles, which can be fully recycled. In addition, volunteers also removed two large fishing nets and ropes, five car tyres, and unfortunately, a dead Loggerhead Turtle was also found and taken away.

Oman is home to several species of endangered turtles who use the warm waters to feed and sandy beaches to lay their eggs. However, plastic and fishing debris in the water pose a serious threat to these marine creatures. Sea turtles often mistake plastic for food and get caught in fishing nets, leading to injuries and fatalities. Wahida Al Zadjali, corporate affair officer at Oman Sail, expressed disappointment at the amount of rubbish removed from the beach but also noted that it was encouraging to see the community come together for this important cause. She emphasized the need for education on the impact of littering and the role individuals can play in preserving the natural environment.

Oman Sail has a strong track record of environmental conservation efforts and has been recognized by Guinness World Records for its initiatives. In 2021, the organization set a record during the Youth Sailing World Championships in Mussanah, and in 2023, volunteers collected over 32,316 plastic bottles to create the largest sentence made from empty plastic bottles. Additionally, Oman Sail has pledged its support to the United Nations’ #CleanSeas campaign, which aims to reduce plastic use and raise awareness about environmental conservation within the community.

The beach clean-up operation at Al Mussanah Public Beach underscores Oman Sail’s commitment to protecting the environment and promoting sustainable practices. By actively engaging volunteers and partnering with local organizations, Oman Sail is making a tangible impact on the cleanliness of the nation’s beaches. The removal of waste, particularly plastic and fishing debris, is crucial for the preservation of marine life, including endangered species like sea turtles. Through initiatives like the beach clean-up, Oman Sail is not only raising awareness about environmental issues but also empowering individuals to take action in safeguarding the natural beauty of Oman.

The presence of plastic bottles, fishing nets, and other debris on the beach highlights the importance of responsible waste management and the need for collective efforts to address the issue. By participating in events like the beach clean-up, individuals can contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment for present and future generations. Oman Sail’s dedication to environmental conservation serves as a model for other organizations and individuals to follow, demonstrating the positive impact that can be achieved through community collaboration and advocacy for sustainability.

In conclusion, Oman Sail’s beach clean-up at Al Mussanah Public Beach serves as a reminder of the urgent need to protect our marine ecosystems and preserve the natural beauty of Oman. Through collective action and ongoing education, we can work towards a cleaner, healthier environment for all living beings. The success of initiatives like the beach clean-up demonstrates the power of community engagement and the positive outcomes that can result from environmental stewardship. As we continue to face environmental challenges, it is vital that we all play our part in promoting sustainable practices and conservation efforts to ensure a better future for our planet.
