The Sultanate of Oman took part in the 149th session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s General Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, represented by the Council of Oman. Khalid Hilal Al Maawali, Chairman of the Shura Council, delivered a speech highlighting Oman’s initiatives in utilizing artificial intelligence and digital technologies for sustainable development and security. He emphasized the importance of international cooperation to achieve positive impacts on countries and peoples in the short and long terms.

In his speech, Al Maawali warned against the misuse of AI technologies, particularly in manipulating humanitarian issues that affect people’s lives. He specifically mentioned AI-enhanced aggression against the Gaza Strip and the Lebanese Republic. Al Maawali stressed the need for united efforts and measures to stop violations and massacres in Palestine and Lebanon, calling for action to address threats to international stability, peoples’ rights, and global peace.

Al Maawali’s speech at the IPU General Assembly in Geneva underscored the organisation’s mission to go beyond enhancing parliamentary dialogue to address all forms of aggression and injustice that jeopardize international stability and challenge peoples’ rights. By addressing such issues, the IPU aims to contribute to the maintenance of global peace and security.

The Sultanate of Oman’s participation in the IPU General Assembly in Geneva reflects its commitment to leveraging AI and advanced digital technologies for sustainable development and security. By emphasizing the importance of international cooperation to achieve positive impacts on countries and peoples, Oman seeks to contribute to addressing global challenges and promoting peace and stability.

Al Maawali’s caution against the misuse of AI technologies and manipulation of humanitarian issues highlights the ethical considerations necessary when harnessing such advanced technologies. By acknowledging the risks of enhanced aggression and human rights violations, Oman takes a proactive stance in advocating for responsible and ethical usage of AI for the betterment of societies and the preservation of global peace.

In conclusion, the Sultanate of Oman’s participation in the IPU General Assembly in Geneva underscores its commitment to advancing sustainable development, security, and international cooperation through the utilization of AI and digital technologies. By raising awareness of the risks associated with the misuse of AI and advocating for ethical considerations, Oman contributes to the global conversation on responsible technology usage and the promotion of peace and stability in the international community.
