As the new school year kicks off in Doha, Qatar, authorities and experts are stressing the importance of road safety for all road users. With the increase in traffic from cars, buses, and pedestrians, officials from the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Hamad Trauma Center (HTC), and the General Directorate of Traffic (GDT) are urging everyone to be vigilant on the roads.

Sheikh Dr Mohamed bin Hamad Al-Thani of MoPH highlighted the significance of prioritizing road safety, especially during the school season. He emphasized the need for road safety to be a regular topic of discussion in the community, particularly when it comes to protecting the health of children. By strictly following road safety measures, everyone can contribute to a safer start to the school year.

Lt Abdul-Mohsin Al Ruwaili from the GDT shared that the directorate has put together a thorough plan to manage traffic flow during the school year. This plan is aimed at improving traffic safety across the country by easing vehicle movement and reducing congestion on main roads, as well as around schools. Increased patrols and traffic police presence at intersections and areas with heavy traffic will help ensure the safety of students and all road users.

Dr Aisha Abeid, Assistant Director of the HMC Injury Prevention Program, highlighted the importance of families focusing on safety and reviewing their road safety practices. Avoiding injuries that can result from motor vehicle accidents should be a top priority for parents, school officials, and drivers in Qatar. Ensuring that all children are properly restrained in the back seats, and practicing caution while driving, are essential steps towards preventing accidents and keeping students safe.

Parents and bus drivers are advised to set good examples by always wearing seatbelts, obeying speed limits, refraining from using mobile phones while driving, and following traffic rules diligently. By adhering to these guidelines, everyone can contribute to creating a safer environment on the roads, especially during the busy school season.

In conclusion, as the new school year begins in Doha, road safety should be a top priority for everyone. By following road safety measures, adhering to traffic laws, and being vigilant while driving, we can ensure the safety of students, pedestrians, and all road users. The collaboration between MoPH, HMC, HTC, and GDT reflects a commitment to enhancing traffic safety in Qatar and making the roads safer for all. Let us all work together to create a secure and accident-free environment for the new school year and beyond.
