Ministry of Environment finishes fencing and restoring 38 meadows

In Doha, Qatar, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) is leading the way in the country’s efforts to protect vegetation cover and combat desertification through the Qatari Desert Rehabilitation Project. The project, supervised by the Wildlife Development Department, aims to rehabilitate and fence 150 meadows over the next five years. These meadows serve as natural havens for rare species of wild plants, ensuring the continuity of wildlife in the region.

According to Mohammed Ahmed Al Khanji, Director of the Wildlife Development Department, the project places particular emphasis on preserving areas of environmental and social significance, where wild vegetation has shown significant growth. Several meadows with rare wild species have already been successfully rehabilitated, highlighting the project’s importance in protecting biodiversity and fighting desertification. The ministry’s dedication to safeguarding Qatar’s natural heritage is evident through these efforts.

The Ministry’s initiatives have proven to be effective in protecting wild areas from encroachment, especially during peak public visitation periods in the rainy and spring seasons. Al Khanji stressed the importance of ensuring the sustainability of these natural areas to prevent long-term damage to the local environment. By taking proactive measures to preserve these ecosystems, the Ministry is demonstrating its commitment to environmental sustainability in Qatar.

Through the Qatari Desert Rehabilitation Project, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change is playing a crucial role in protecting and preserving the country’s natural resources. By rehabilitating and fencing meadows with rare wild species, the project is not only safeguarding biodiversity but also combatting desertification in the region.
