Medical conference highlights breast cancer and the importance of medical oncology

The International Medical Conference on Advances in the Surgical Treatment of Breast Cancer and Role Medical Oncology was held in Muscat, Oman in association with the Muscat Family Physicians Group and Global Treatment Services. The conference aimed to address the increasing numbers of breast cancer cases in Oman, where it accounts for 13% of all cancers detected and 21% in females. Dr. Salim, Senior Consultant and Head of Department of Breast Surgery at the National Oncology Center in Oman, was the Guest of Honour at the event.

Dr. Viju Murthy, Consultant Breast Surgeon at HCG Hospital Mumbai, highlighted the importance of increasing awareness about screening and early detection of breast cancer. She discussed various surgical approaches for managing both early and advanced breast cancer, including scarless techniques and reconstruction options, emphasizing the importance of restoring a woman’s body image and confidence after treatment. She also delivered a message of hope, stating that with the latest advancements in treatment, there is a possibility of a cure for many breast cancer patients.

Dr. Sachin Trivedi, Director of Medical Oncology at HCG Mumbai, spoke about the new approach to anti-cancer treatment using immunotherapy. He explained how immunotherapy has revolutionized cancer treatment and improved the lives of cancer patients, potentially leading to a cure in some cases. He also discussed the role of comprehensive gene profiling in successful cancer management. Both speakers engaged in an interactive session, addressing questions from attending doctors, which included breast cancer specialists, surgeons, gynecologists, internists, and family physicians from both government and private health establishments in Oman.

The conference concluded with Dr. Sanjay Dalal, Founder of the Muscat Family Physicians’ group, expressing gratitude to the speakers for their informative and educational presentations. The speakers emphasized the importance of collaboration in scientific exchange and the possibility of leveraging clinical skills between colleagues in Oman and India. They expressed their commitment to returning to Oman to strengthen ties with colleagues and the people of Oman. HCG Hospital, known for setting benchmarks in cancer treatment and patient care in India, pledged to continue such educational programs in Oman.

In conclusion, the International Medical Conference in Muscat provided valuable insights into the advancements in the surgical treatment of breast cancer and the role of medical oncology. The event served as a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration between medical professionals from Oman and India, with a focus on improving outcomes for breast cancer patients through early detection, innovative treatment approaches, and comprehensive care. The commitment of HCG Hospital and the Muscat Family Physicians Group to continuing such educational initiatives reflects their dedication to advancing cancer care in Oman and beyond.
