Kamindu Mendis, continued his excellent form by scoring a brilliant century, leading Sri Lanka to a total of 302-7 on the first day of the first Test against New Zealand in Galle. Despite a shaky start with the Sri Lankan team falling to 106-4, Kamindu’s fourth Test hundred helped them surpass the 300-run mark. The day ended with Ramesh Mendis batting on 14 not out, accompanied by Prabath Jayasuriya who had yet to score at the Galle International Stadium.

New Zealand’s William O’Rourke had a strong bowling performance, claiming 3-54 and troubling the Sri Lankan batsmen with his aggressive pace. Dimuth Karunaratne was dismissed for just two runs, while Pathum Nissanka fell victim to a yorker. Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal attempted to stabilize the innings, but Mathews had to leave the field due to an injury caused by an O’Rourke delivery. Chandimal was later dismissed by Tim Southee, and Dhananjaya Silva fell to Glenn Phillips.

Despite the setback, Kamindu Mendis continued to shine with the bat, scoring his century after being dropped on 21 by Phillips. His innings earned him praise from his teammates in the dressing room. Kusal Mendis also contributed with a half-century before being dismissed in a bizarre manner, hitting a shot straight into Tom Latham at short-leg, resulting in a catch for Southee at midwicket. Ajaz Patel finally ended Kamindu’s innings with a delivery that reared up and resulted in a catch for Daryl Mitchell.

Kamindu Mendis entered the match with an impressive record of seven 50-plus scores in 10 Test innings, and his century further solidified his reputation as a talented batsman. The left-hander showcased his skills by driving the ball through cover to reach his hundred, forming a partnership of 103 runs with Kusal Mendis before his dismissal. The day ended with Sri Lanka at 302-7, with Ramesh Mendis and Prabath Jayasuriya at the crease.

Overall, the first day of the Test match in Galle showcased a mix of brilliant batting performances by Kamindu Mendis, coupled with strong bowling efforts from William O’Rourke and the New Zealand team. The match promises an exciting battle between the two sides in the upcoming days, with Sri Lanka looking to build on their total and New Zealand aiming to make a comeback. Kamindu Mendis’ century stood out as the highlight of the day, earning him accolades for his exceptional display of skill and determination.
