Bahrain’s jewelry industry is facing a wave of concern as local jewelers warn customers about the risks of buying gold online. While the convenience and attractiveness of online deals may be tempting, experts emphasize the importance of proper inspection to avoid costly disappointments. Abdullah Al Shehabi, owner of “Set Al Habayeb” jewelry store, highlights the most common scams that occur online, where customers are unable to physically examine the pieces and are therefore vulnerable to fraud. It is advised to buy from reputable stores with a proven track record to prioritize quality and authenticity.

One crucial aspect to consider when purchasing gold is to carefully scrutinize the pieces for hallmarks, which are official stamps that indicate purity. Al Shehabi stresses the importance of clear hallmarks, such as 18 karat or 22 karat, to show the gold’s purity. He also recommends asking for a purity test in the store using specialized tools to verify the gold’s composition. Monitoring daily gold prices before making a purchase is also crucial, as significantly lower prices could be a red flag. Customers should always request a detailed invoice outlining the gold’s karat, weight, and price to serve as a guarantee in case of any disputes.

Najeeb Al Hayki, owner of “Mayar Jewelry,” confirms that while there have been instances of fraud with small gold pieces, larger gold bars have not raised any issues due to strict regulations and surveillance in Bahrain. Buying from authorized stores with official municipality seals is recommended, along with prioritizing established Bahraini jewelers with a reputation for customer trust. Abdulkareem Al Shehabi, owner of “Al Murtaja Jewelry,” echoes this sentiment by emphasizing that all jewelry stores in Bahrain adhere to strict regulations ensuring the quality of gold sold.

Al Shehabi highlights that gold circulating in the Bahraini market undergoes official stamping by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce to safeguard consumers from potential fraud. Strict regulations and constant market monitoring contribute to the negligible incidence of gold fraud in Bahrain. Customers are advised to purchase gold from certified Bahraini stores, whether they are looking for crafted pieces or gold bars. Al Shehabi reassures consumers that all commercial establishments in Bahrain adhere to regulations that protect consumer rights and shield them from fraudulent activities, making Bahrain a country where one can confidently buy gold.
