Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Poland and met with his Polish counterpart, Donald Tusk, before heading to Kyiv for top-level meetings. The two leaders discussed security, the war in Ukraine, and strengthening bilateral ties. Modi emphasized Poland’s importance as India’s key economic partner in Central Europe. They are expected to sign bilateral strategic cooperation agreements covering cybersecurity and the defence sector.

Poland, located on the eastern flank of NATO and the European Union, has been providing political, humanitarian, and defence support to Ukraine in response to the ongoing war across its eastern border. Modi’s visit to Moscow last month, where he met with President Vladimir Putin, was criticized by the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who called it a “huge disappointment” and a “devastating blow to peace efforts.” Modi has refrained from condemning Russia while advocating for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.

The meeting between Modi and Tusk in Poland marked 70 years of official bilateral relations between India and Warsaw. The value of bilateral trade between the two countries has significantly increased, with India’s exports playing a significant role in the growth. Both countries have exchanged visits in the past, with former Indian President Pratibha Patil visiting Poland in 2009 and Tusk visiting India during his first term as prime minister in 2010. The current visit is focused on enhancing cooperation in cybersecurity and defence, highlighting the growing partnership between India and Poland.

Modi’s visit to Poland comes at a time of increasing global tensions, particularly in the context of the war in Ukraine. Poland’s position as a strategic partner in Central Europe makes it a vital ally for India in addressing security challenges and strengthening economic ties. The agreements expected to be signed during the visit will further solidify the cooperation between the two countries in areas of mutual interest, including cybersecurity and defence.

Despite criticism for his meeting with Putin in Moscow, Modi’s visit to Poland demonstrates India’s commitment to enhancing bilateral relations with key partners in Europe. The focus on cybersecurity and defence cooperation underscores the shared priorities of both countries in addressing emerging threats and challenges in the region. The visit is also an opportunity to commemorate the long-standing relationship between India and Poland and explore new avenues for collaboration in the future.

The discussions between Modi and Tusk reflect the shared interest in promoting peace and stability in the region while addressing security concerns. The signing of strategic cooperation agreements is expected to deepen the partnership between India and Poland, further solidifying their commitment to working together on common goals. As India continues to engage with its international partners, including in Central Europe, the visit to Poland underscores the importance of strengthening ties and building alliances in an increasingly complex global environment.
