Guterres urges reduction of hostilities between Israel and Lebanon.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has raised concerns over the escalating cross-border attacks along the unofficial Blue Line between Israel and Lebanon. The Blue Line, established by the United Nations in 2000, serves as a “line of withdrawal” rather than an official border. Guterres has called for an immediate de-escalation of tensions to prevent further risks to both the Lebanese and Israeli populations and to maintain regional security and stability. The situation has prompted over 600 UNIFIL peacekeepers to continue their mission in southern Lebanon, with the Spanish Blue Helmets providing essential support, such as delivering water to advanced positions along the Blue Line.

Despite facing challenges due to the ongoing clashes between Hezbollah and Israel, UNIFIL peacekeepers like Corporal Daniel Ramírez remain committed to their mission. An incident earlier this month resulting in the injury of three peacekeepers serves as a reminder to all parties involved to avoid harm to the Blue Helmets. While the recent increase in hostilities has not had a significant humanitarian impact, the conflict continues to severely affect civilians on both sides of the Blue Line. The United Nations emphasizes the importance of all parties adhering to their obligations under international humanitarian law to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure at all times.

António Guterres’ call for de-escalation comes as tensions rise along the Blue Line, posing risks to both the Lebanese and Israeli populations. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) continues to carry out its mission in challenging circumstances, with more than 600 peacekeepers stationed in southern Lebanon. The Spanish Blue Helmets play a crucial role in providing support to the peacekeeping mission by delivering water to advanced positions along the Blue Line.
