Flappy Bird, a popular mobile game that was originally launched in 2013 and subsequently removed from digital stores in 2014, has made a comeback as a crypto game on Telegram. The relaunch of the game on September 15 has sparked controversy, as the original creator, Dong Nguyen, has distanced himself from the new version. The game is now available on a Telegram channel as part of a collaboration with Notcoin, a Telegram-based web3 game. The new Flappy Bird version focuses on integrating with The Open Network (TON) and introduces blockchain elements like token rewards through a “Flap-a-TON” event.

Despite the relaunch of Flappy Bird as a crypto game, its original creator, Dong Nguyen, has made it clear that he has no involvement in the project and does not support crypto. Nguyen, who decided to remove the game from digital stores in 2014 due to its unexpected global success and the negative impact it had on players’ lives, expressed his disapproval of the new version. The game’s sudden fame and intense reactions from users, including addiction to its challenging mechanics, led Nguyen to take down the game after it became a global sensation.

The relaunch of Flappy Bird has also been marred by trademark disputes and suspicions surrounding the authenticity of the new version. After a legal challenge, Gametech Holdings took ownership of the trademark and later transferred it to The Flappy Bird Foundation Group. Cybersecurity researcher Varun Biniwale has raised concerns about the legitimacy of the game’s relaunch, noting that the “official” page does not look entirely authentic. The art style and design of the new version resemble the countless clones that flooded the market after the original game was removed in 2014, raising questions about the true intent behind the relaunch.

Despite the controversy and skepticism surrounding the relaunch of Flappy Bird as a crypto game, the new version has gained attention for its integration with blockchain technology and token rewards. The @Flappybirdbot channel on Telegram encourages players to join teams, crack open daily eggs, and earn points for their flock. Top teams are promised prizes each week, adding a competitive element to the game. The introduction of blockchain elements like token rewards through the “Flap-a-TON” event aims to provide players with a new way to engage with the game and potentially earn rewards for their participation.

In conclusion, the relaunch of Flappy Bird as a crypto game on Telegram has stirred controversy and raised questions about its authenticity and the involvement of the original creator, Dong Nguyen. Despite Nguyen’s disapproval and lack of support for crypto, the game’s integration with blockchain technology and token rewards has garnered attention among players. The trademark disputes and suspicions surrounding the game’s relaunch add another layer of complexity to its comeback. As the Flappy Bird saga continues, it remains to be seen how the crypto integration and blockchain elements will impact the game’s future and reception among players.
