First Arab Woman from Qatar Achieves Explorer’s Grand Slam

Sheikha Asma bint Thani Al-Thani made history as she became the first Arab and Qatari to complete the Explorer’s Grand Slam by posing atop the Castensz Pyramid on October 11, 2024. This prestigious adventure challenge involves climbing the highest peak on each continent and skiing to the North and South Poles, a feat achieved by fewer than 75 people in history. Sheikha Asma expressed her honor in being the first Arab woman and Qatari national to accomplish this milestone and shared her journey on social media.

Sheikha Asma’s journey towards the Explorer’s Grand Slam began in 2014 with Kilimanjaro, followed by reaching the North Pole in 2018 and conquering Aconcagua in 2019. In 2021, she summitted Elbrus and started the year with Mount Vinson in January, moving on to ski to the South Pole Last Degree. By May 2022, she reached the peak of her dream destination, Mount Everest, and in June 2022, she conquered Mt Denali, leaving her just one summit away from completing the Grand Slam. Sheikha Asma reflected on her journey as a testament to persistence and staying true to one’s dreams, emphasizing the importance of pushing through challenges.

With successful summits of Mount Lhotse, Kangchenjunga, Mount Ama Dablam, Mount Dhaulagiri, Mount Manaslu, and Labuche Peak, Sheikha Asma has shown her determination and perseverance in achieving her goals. She dedicated her most recent victory to every young girl with big dreams, encouraging them to keep dreaming big and believing in themselves.
