Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-min’s father and brother have been fined in a child abuse case in South Korea. Son Woong-jung, a public figure in South Korea, runs a football academy where his son Son Heung-yun coaches. The pair, along with another coach, were accused of physically and verbally abusing a 12-year-old student, leading to fines and orders to undertake child abuse treatment programs.

The student, identified only as Kim, claimed that a coach hit him with a corner flag during training, causing injuries that required weeks of treatment. Kim also alleged that he was the target of foul language just weeks after joining the academy. Son senior acknowledged the incident but denied that it amounted to physical abuse, stating that it was part of fitness training. Son Heung-yun previously mentioned that he and Son Heung-min had been hit by their father during training.

South Korean prosecutors fined Son Woong-jung, Son Heung-yun, and a coach based on the Child Welfare Act and Child Abuse Punishment Act, without disclosing the exact amount of the fine. The trio was also ordered to undergo child abuse treatment programs to address the accusations of abuse. The incident has caused scrutiny on the practices at Son’s football academy and has raised concerns regarding the treatment of young athletes in similar programs.

Son Heung-min, a prominent figure in the English Premier League, has not made any public statements regarding the child abuse case involving his father and brother. The case has garnered attention in South Korea and internationally, leading to discussions on the responsibilities of coaches and parents in youth sports programs. Authorities are emphasizing the importance of protecting the well-being of young athletes and ensuring that they are not subjected to any form of abuse or mistreatment.

The football academy run by Son Woong-jung has been at the center of controversy following the child abuse allegations. Parents and students are questioning the methods used at the academy and demanding greater oversight to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. The fines and orders for child abuse treatment programs serve as a reminder of the consequences and responsibilities that come with coaching youth athletes.

The incident involving Son Heung-min’s family members underscores the need for transparency and accountability in sports academies and programs. Coaches and parents are urged to prioritize the safety and well-being of young athletes above all else. The child abuse case serves as a cautionary tale for those involved in youth sports, highlighting the importance of creating a supportive and nurturing environment for young athletes to thrive and develop their talents.
