The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has awarded a contract worth Dh1.1 billion for the acquisition of 636 new buses, with delivery scheduled for 2024 and 2025. These buses, which have low carbon emissions and comply with European specifications, will help in increasing the share of public transport journeys to 25 percent by 2030. The fleet includes 40 electric buses, the largest and first of their kind in the UAE.

The new buses will be equipped with advanced tech features such as the Driver Behaviour Monitoring System, Automated Passenger Counting, and Driver Identity Authentication. These systems will not only enhance safety and driver conduct but also help in curbing fare evasion. The buses are aligned with RTA’s Public Transport Zero Emissions in Dubai 2050 Strategy, aiming for the conversion of all buses, taxis, and limousines to zero-emission vehicles by 2050.

The contract includes the purchase of 40 electric buses from Zhongtong, 450 city service buses (400 MAN and 50 Zhongtong buses), 76 double-decker buses from Volvo, and 70 articulated buses from Isuzu Anadolu. These buses meet Gulf specifications, have Euro 6 engines, and are classified under the United Nations Vehicle Category Class II, allowing flexibility in operation on urban and inter-urban routes. They are equipped with features like low floors, bike racks, Wi-Fi service, and mobile phone charging points.

Ahmed Hashim Bahrozyan, CEO of the Public Transport Agency, emphasized that the new buses are designed to provide the best services to public transport users, with special features for people of determination, children, and wide seats for comfort. RTA is also developing a special fuel consumption testing system to compare consumption among different bus types. The Dh1.1 billion deal is in line with the directives of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and under the supervision of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The addition of these new buses to Dubai’s public transport system not only supports the RTA’s vision of increasing public transport usage but also contributes to sustainable transportation goals. The focus on zero-emission vehicles and advanced tech features ensures a safer and more efficient transport experience for passengers. The strategic alignment with the UAE’s leadership directives underscores the commitment to innovation and excellence in public transportation.

In conclusion, the investment in new buses reflects Dubai’s commitment to enhancing the quality of public transportation services and promoting a more sustainable and environmentally friendly mode of travel. The advanced features and specifications of the buses, along with the focus on fuel efficiency and emissions reduction, showcase the city’s dedication to providing a modern and efficient transport system for residents and visitors. With the addition of these buses, Dubai’s public transport network is set to evolve and expand, offering a reliable and convenient mode of transportation for all.
