Mark Cavendish ended his cycling career on a high note, winning the Singapore Criterium race on November 10, 2024. The British cyclist, known for his exceptional sprinting abilities, crossed the finish line in signature style to claim his 166th career victory. Cavendish expressed his emotions after the race, revealing that he realized during the final laps that this would mark the end of his career. With a sense of nostalgia, he passed the flamme rouge for the last time, cherishing the moment.

In a dramatic finish, Cavendish surged ahead of defending champion Jasper Philipsen coming out of the last bend. The Manxman, who holds the record for the most stage wins in the Tour de France, looked back before raising his arms in triumph as he celebrated his final win in professional cycling. Reflecting on his performance, Cavendish noted that he lacked sharpness as he hadn’t raced since the Tour de France. Despite this, he pushed himself to the limit to secure the victory in Singapore.

The Criterium race in Singapore, organized by the Tour de France, featured a 25-lap street circuit that tested the riders’ skills and endurance. Cavendish admitted to feeling nervous about crashing during the race but was determined to finish on a high note. As he bids farewell to his cycling career, Cavendish expressed his love for the sport and his desire to remain involved in promoting cycling. He emphasized the significance of the Tour de France as not just a bike race but as a global sports event that captures the dreams of both children and adults.

Looking ahead, Cavendish sees cycling as a form of freedom that offers endless possibilities. He is committed to supporting the growth and development of the sport, whether as a competitive discipline, a mode of transport, or a recreational activity. As one of the most celebrated cyclists of his generation, Cavendish’s legacy extends beyond his victories on the road. His passion for cycling and dedication to promoting the sport will continue to inspire future generations of cyclists to pursue their dreams and embrace the spirit of competition and camaraderie that defines the world of professional cycling.
