The fourth edition of the Oman Geological Heritage Exhibition “Sustainability and Job Opportunities” opened at Al Hazm Fort in A’Rustaq, Oman, showcasing the importance of geological heritage in the Sultanate. The exhibition aims to diversify the museum system and enhance tourist and heritage destinations in various governorates. Organized by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism in cooperation with the Office of the Governor of South Al Batinah, Petroleum Development Oman, and the Geological Society of Oman, the event will continue until the end of June 2025.

The exhibition includes six corners, each highlighting a different aspect of geological heritage. Visitors can explore the story of geological heritage, the diverse geology of Oman, and the formation of the land in geological history. Additionally, the importance of preserving geological heritage and ensuring its sustainability is emphasized, along with the various job opportunities available in geotourism. These topics are presented through interactive displays and informative exhibits.

One of the highlights of the exhibition is the display of distinctive pieces of geological heritage found in Oman. Among them is a fossil dating back about 800 million years, as well as three-dimensional scientific models of an extinct primitive elephant and dinosaur. The fossilized remains of these ancient creatures were discovered in different areas of Oman, and serve as a reminder of the rich geological history of the region. Other unique geological fossils are also on display, showcasing the diversity and significance of Oman’s geological heritage.

The opening of the exhibition, under the auspices of Eng. Masoud Said Al Hashimi, Governor of South Al Batinah, signifies the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism’s commitment to highlighting the importance of geological heritage in Oman. By preserving and promoting the country’s geological sites, the Ministry aims to raise awareness and attract tourists interested in exploring the unique landscapes and geological features of Oman. The exhibition serves as a platform to educate the public and inspire future generations to appreciate and protect the country’s geological treasures.

Through collaborations with various organizations and institutions, such as Petroleum Development Oman and the Geological Society of Oman, the exhibition is able to present a comprehensive overview of Oman’s geological heritage. By showcasing rare fossils, scientific models, and informative displays, visitors can gain a deeper understanding of the geological history of Oman. The exhibition also highlights the potential job opportunities in geotourism, encouraging local communities to get involved in preserving and promoting the country’s geological sites for sustainable development.

Overall, the Oman Geological Heritage Exhibition in A’Rustaq offers a unique opportunity for visitors to explore and learn about the geological treasures of the Sultanate. From ancient fossils to interactive exhibits, the exhibition provides a comprehensive look at Oman’s diverse geology and rich history. By promoting the importance of preserving geological heritage and showcasing job opportunities in geotourism, the event serves as a catalyst for sustainable tourism development and heritage conservation in Oman.
