Archer Aviation, a US-based company, has delivered its first Midnight aircraft to the US Air Force for evaluation. This aircraft will be used as an air taxi in the UAE, where Archer has signed a multi-hundred-million-dollar deal with the Abu Dhabi Investment Office to manufacture air taxis and establish its international headquarters. The developer of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) machines plans to launch air taxi operations in the UAE next year.

This new mode of air transport will significantly reduce travel time between Abu Dhabi and Dubai from 60-90 minutes to just 10-20 minutes. The cost of a ride on the air taxi is estimated to be between Dh800-Dh1,500 for inter-emirate travel and approximately Dh350 for travel within an emirate. With Archer’s Midnight aircraft’s vertical takeoff and landing capabilities, proprietary electric powertrain, and low noise profile, it is well-suited for military aviation operations and is expected to provide a safer, cost-effective, and quieter alternative to existing internal combustion engine options.

The Midnight aircraft has received military airworthiness assessment approval from the US Department of Defence, allowing for flight testing and government-directed testing for the US Air Force. This approval validates the aircraft’s readiness for military-specific mission concepts and operational testing. The CEO of Archer Aviation, Adam Goldstein, stated that the delivery of the Midnight aircraft represents a pivotal moment for the future of military aviation and aims to demonstrate Midnight’s potential to ensure that the United States leads with advanced technology.

The Chief Commercialisation Officer for the Department of the Air Force, Col. Elliott Leigh, expressed the potential of Archer’s Midnight aircraft to enhance operational capabilities. The partnership between Archer Aviation and the US Air Force will explore ways in which this advanced aircraft can contribute to military missions. The Midnight aircraft holds promise in enhancing rapid response, agility, and operational effectiveness across various mission profiles, offering a quieter and more efficient alternative to traditional aircraft options.

The development of the Midnight aircraft signifies a significant step forward in the field of air transportation, with a focus on efficiency, safety, and advanced technology. With plans to launch air taxi operations in the UAE within the next 18 to 24 months, Archer Aviation’s commitment to innovation and collaboration with government agencies demonstrates its dedication to advancing the future of aviation. The Midnight aircraft’s features and capabilities position it as a game-changer in military aviation, offering a more sustainable and effective solution for a wide range of operational needs.
