Abu Dhabi’s transport authority has introduced a cutting-edge Green Bus service that operates using clean hydrogen and electric energy. The initiative, part of the Green Bus Programme, aims to transform Abu Dhabi Island into a public transport green zone by 2030. The service, which starts today, will operate on Route 65 between Marina Mall and Shams Boutik in Al Reem Island.

The Green Bus Programme in Abu Dhabi is a comprehensive plan to assess and manage public transport buses in the emirate. Through collaboration with international government bodies and bus manufacturers, the programme aims to evaluate and select suitable technologies in hydrogen and electric power for residents, visitors, and commuters in the capital. The project also includes the development of Emirati skills and expertise through specialized training programs in hydrogen and electric buses.

Bus operators and drivers will undergo theoretical and practical training sessions as part of the Green Bus Programme, which was launched in 2023. The assessment period for the program is set to conclude in June 2025. During this time, certified technicians will receive training to ensure they are equipped to perform maintenance and inspections on the new green buses, leading to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by over 100,000 metric tonnes in the future.

In addition to reducing carbon emissions, the Green Bus Programme aims to establish standard specifications for green buses to meet the climate and operational requirements of Abu Dhabi. This reduction in greenhouse gas emissions aligns with Abu Dhabi’s commitment to the Paris Agreement and its goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The program is seen as an innovative platform for collaboration between the public and private sectors, with a focus on building partnerships with local and international stakeholders.

The Green Bus Programme signifies a significant milestone in Abu Dhabi’s efforts to promote sustainable public transportation and reduce carbon emissions. By introducing green buses powered by clean energy sources, the emirate is paving the way for a more environmentally friendly transport system. With a focus on training and collaboration, the program aims to enhance skills and expertise in the field of hydrogen and electric buses, setting a benchmark for eco-friendly public transportation initiatives worldwide.

In conclusion, the launch of the Green Bus service in Abu Dhabi represents a major step towards achieving a more sustainable and environmentally friendly public transport system in the emirate. By implementing clean energy technologies and investing in training programs, Abu Dhabi is leading the way in promoting green transportation solutions. The Green Bus Programme’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and fostering collaboration between various stakeholders highlights the emirate’s dedication to sustainability and innovation in the transportation sector.
