Scholarships can be a game-changer for students wishing to pursue higher education, especially at prestigious institutions such as the American University of Sharjah (AUS). A Jordanian expat, Zain Osama, received a 40 per cent scholarship at AUS, which significantly reduced the financial burden for her family. In addition to the base scholarship, Zain was able to secure an additional 25 per cent discount because her elder brother was also attending the university. This experience highlights the importance of scholarships in making education more accessible and affordable for students from diverse backgrounds.

AUS has a dedicated fund to support high-achieving undergraduate students with limited financial means. First-time students at AUS may be eligible for various financial grants, merit-based scholarships, and family tuition grants. These grants can collectively cover up to 55 per cent of tuition and fees, making education more affordable for students and families. Additionally, after completing their first semester, students may qualify for additional scholarships, providing them with ongoing financial support throughout their academic journey.

Students at AUS have the opportunity to add onto existing scholarships based on their academic performance and extracurricular achievements. For example, Fatima Haziq, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, initially secured a 50 per cent scholarship at the university. By maintaining a high GPA and meeting certain academic criteria, Fatima was able to increase her scholarship to 60 per cent and eventually to 70 per cent. This showcases the university’s commitment to rewarding students for their dedication and hard work.

In addition to academic scholarships, AUS also offers the ‘Active Student Scholarship’ for exceptional students who excel in extracurricular activities. However, it is crucial for students to maintain their academic performance to retain any additional scholarships they receive. Scholarships are a valuable resource for students to pursue their higher education goals without the financial strain, ensuring that deserving individuals have access to quality education and equal opportunities for success.

The UAE government and private universities play a significant role in facilitating student recruitment and overseeing the admissions process at various institutions. Through targeted outreach initiatives and career fairs, universities engage prospective students and provide them with essential information about the educational opportunities available. Recently, three Emirati siblings were awarded full government scholarships to study abroad at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, highlighting the government’s commitment to supporting students in pursuing international education opportunities.

Scholarships not only alleviate the financial burden for students and families but also enable individuals to explore new academic and cultural experiences. UAE national Sara Al Shamsi, one of the twin sisters studying engineering at HKUST, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to study abroad and immerse themselves in a new community and culture. The Abu Dhabi Scholarships Program has enabled students like Sara to fulfill their academic aspirations and broaden their horizons through international education. Overall, scholarships play a crucial role in promoting access to education and empowering students to achieve their potential.
