Mercedes has announced that Italian driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli will replace Lewis Hamilton in the 2025 Formula One season. Antonelli, who just turned 18, will partner George Russell at Mercedes. While Antonelli acknowledges the challenge of stepping in for Hamilton, he sees himself as the next driver for the team. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff expressed confidence in the young driver, emphasizing that Antonelli represents the future of the team.

Wolff’s decision to promote Antonelli came shortly after Hamilton revealed his move to Ferrari. He believes that both Antonelli and Russell will be able to lead Mercedes into the future successfully. While the length of Antonelli’s contract was not disclosed, Wolff did not rule out the possibility of pursuing Red Bull’s Max Verstappen for the 2026 season. Antonelli’s first F1 drive at the Italian Grand Prix ended abruptly when he crashed Russell’s car during the practice session. However, Mercedes is giving him another opportunity to drive at the Mexican GP in October.

Antonelli’s racing career has been marked by success, winning multiple championships in the lower levels before moving up to Formula Two. Despite a slow start to the F2 season, he claimed his first victory at Silverstone and followed it up with another win in Budapest. As the hopes of Italian F1 fans now rest on Antonelli, who aims to bring glory back to a nation that has not had a GP winner since 2006. The last Italian to win the drivers’ championship was Alberto Ascari in 1953, while Mario Andretti, who was born in Italy, won the title in 1978 representing the United States.

On the day of the announcement, Mercedes had a strong showing in free practice at the Italian Grand Prix, with Hamilton and Russell leading the timesheets. Hamilton set the fastest time, followed closely by Russell and Charles Leclerc of Ferrari. The team’s performance reflects their commitment to finishing the season on a high note. As Antonelli prepares to make his debut in Formula One, he will have the opportunity to showcase his talent and potentially become a key figure in the sport’s future. With the support of Mercedes, Antonelli is poised to take on the challenge of filling Hamilton’s shoes and making a name for himself on the global stage.
