UN Report Praises Bahrain for Progress in Achieving SDGs

The United Nations team in Bahrain has recently launched the 2023 Country Results Report, highlighting the Kingdom’s reform plan for economic and social growth under its Economic Vision 2030. The report also details the country’s progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2023. Cooperation between Bahrain and the UN is expected to continue growing throughout 2024 as the UN partners with both the government and the private sector to implement projects that promote sustainable development. Two new projects focusing on early childhood education and care, as well as strengthening mechanisms to combat human trafficking, are in the development phase with funding secured for their implementation.

The UN is also working with the Bahrain government to finalize a new cooperation framework that will be jointly signed and launched on 1 January 2025. The framework aims to enhance strategic cooperation for sustainable development and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. The recent meeting of the Joint Steering Committee between the Government of Bahrain and the UN at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reviewed key achievements in 2023, progress indicators, and outlined steps for the new cooperation framework for 2025-2029.

Khaled Al-Mekwad, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Bahrain, emphasized the progress made in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in 2023 and the strengthening of the partnership between the UN and the Government of Bahrain. He stated that 2023 was a year of consolidation, reflection, and adaptation for the UN country team in Bahrain. The team unified its programmes and initiatives to achieve greater coherence while addressing emerging development challenges in the context of a high-income country. In 2024, the UN country team in Bahrain will continue contributing to sustainable development and accelerating the achievement of the SDGs.
