The upcoming Austrian elections are expected to see the far-right Freedom Party topping the polls. Austria’s EU Minister, Karoline Edtstadler, believes that the EU needs to develop its migration policy to address the concerns of voters who are leaning towards the far-right parties. She emphasized the need for asylum centres outside the bloc to tackle illegal migration issues. Edtstadler, a member of the Austrian People’s Party, stressed the importance of taking citizens’ concerns seriously and implementing measures at the European level to mitigate the rising issue of illegal migration in Austria.

The EU recently finalized new immigration rules in May after years of disagreements among member states. However, organizations such as Amnesty International and Oxfam have criticized the new rules for not offering adequate solutions for those seeking safety. Member states, including Austria, have called for the development of outsourcing migration and asylum policy, highlighting the need for equal partnerships with key countries to address the increase in irregular arrivals in recent years. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also emphasized the importance of decreasing irregular migration into Germany after a tragic incident involving a Syrian asylum seeker.

Edtstadler believes that the EU should gradually consider enlarging to include new members; however, she acknowledges that this alone might not be sufficient to win elections. She stressed the importance of politicians being responsible for the full term they are elected for and addressing the necessity of accession for security reasons to deliver a more comprehensible message to the public. It is clear that addressing migration issues at the European level is crucial to prevent far-right parties from gaining momentum in elections by offering long-term solutions that resonate with voters’ concerns.

In conclusion, the upcoming Austrian elections highlight the significance of addressing migration issues at the European level to meet the concerns of voters. The need to develop a comprehensive migration policy with asylum centres outside the EU to address illegal migration is crucial. Member states, including Austria, have called for a strategic approach to outsourcing migration and asylum policy to effectively manage irregular arrivals. The recent tragic incident in Germany underscored the urgency of decreasing irregular migration and enhancing security measures. Politicians need to be responsible for the full term they are elected for and clearly communicate the necessity of accession for security reasons to the public. By addressing these issues effectively, the EU can prevent far-right parties from gaining momentum in elections and provide long-term solutions to mitigate migration challenges.
