The United Arab Emirates, United States, Switzerland, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the African Union, and the United Nations have come together to issue a joint statement on Sudan in commemoration of World Humanitarian Day. The statement expressed the commitment to reopen crucial routes for food and medicine to reach the millions of people in Sudan who are suffering from starvation and acute hunger. The group also acknowledged the sacrifices made by humanitarian workers, with at least 22 aid workers killed and 34 injured since April 2023 in Sudan. Such acts of violence against those providing assistance are deemed unacceptable.

The joint statement emphasized solidarity with Sudanese and international humanitarian workers who work tirelessly, often facing great risks, to provide aid to those in need across the country. The parties involved urgently called for the protection of civilians and aid workers in the conflict zone, urging all to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law as outlined in the Jeddah Declaration. The group reiterated their commitment to ‘act for humanity’ and called upon all parties to the conflict to do the same.

The call for protecting aid workers and civilians comes as a response to the ongoing conflict in Sudan, where humanitarian workers often experience risks and dangers while carrying out their crucial tasks. The statement highlights the need for all parties involved in the conflict to respect international humanitarian laws and prioritize the safety and well-being of those providing essential aid to the vulnerable populations in Sudan. The joint effort by the various nations and organizations aims to address the challenges faced by humanitarian workers in Sudan and ensure the uninterrupted delivery of aid to those in need.

World Humanitarian Day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by humanitarian workers worldwide, who selflessly dedicate themselves to serving others in times of crisis and conflict. The joint statement issued by the UAE, US, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, African Union, and the UN underscores the importance of recognizing and honoring the commitment and bravery of these individuals, who often risk their lives to provide essential assistance to those in need. The statement calls for increased protection and support for aid workers in Sudan and emphasizes the collective responsibility of all parties to ensure their safety.

As the conflict in Sudan continues to impact the lives of millions of people, the joint statement issued on World Humanitarian Day highlights the urgency of addressing the humanitarian crisis in the country. The call for the protection of aid workers and the delivery of essential supplies to those in need underscores the commitment of the international community to address the challenges faced by vulnerable populations in Sudan. By working together and urging all parties to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law, the group aims to ensure the safety and well-being of civilians and aid workers in the conflict-affected areas of Sudan.
