The UAE’s unemployment insurance scheme, overseen by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (Mohre), has already seen more than 8 million employees register since its launch in January 2023. The scheme is mandatory for all national and expatriate employees in the public and private sectors, including free zone workers. Failure to sign up or renew the insurance policy may result in a fine of Dh400. Certain categories, such as business owners, domestic workers, temporary employees, minors under 18, and retirees transitioning to new employment, are excluded from the scheme.

It is important for eligible employees to register promptly to avoid penalties and take advantage of the financial safety net provided by the scheme. The unemployment insurance offers support for a limited duration in case of job loss. There are two categories within the scheme based on the employee’s basic salary: those earning Dh16,000 or less pay a premium of Dh5 per month with a maximum monthly compensation of Dh10,000, while employees earning more than Dh16,000 pay a premium of Dh10 per month with a maximum compensation of Dh20,000.

To qualify for compensation, beneficiaries must have maintained their subscription for at least 12 consecutive months. Rights to compensation are forfeited if an individual cancels their residency and leaves the country or if they secure new employment. Employees must renew their insurance before expiration and apply for compensation within 30 days of termination of their employment. Claim filing can be done through the ILOE website or its app.

The unemployment insurance scheme in the UAE aims to provide a safety net for employees in case of job loss. It is designed as an affordable option to support individuals during times of unemployment and financial instability. With millions of employees already registered for the scheme, it is clear that there is a significant interest and awareness of the benefits it provides. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (Mohre) plays a crucial role in overseeing the implementation and enforcement of the scheme to ensure that all eligible employees are covered.

It is important for employees to understand the requirements and conditions of the unemployment insurance scheme to ensure they can access the benefits when needed. By registering promptly, maintaining their subscription, and following the guidelines for compensation, employees can protect themselves financially during periods of unemployment. The UAE’s unemployment insurance scheme serves as a valuable resource for both national and expatriate workers, providing a sense of security and stability in the event of job loss.

Overall, the UAE’s unemployment insurance scheme has seen a significant uptake since its launch, with millions of employees already benefiting from its financial safety net. By following the guidelines and requirements set out by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (Mohre), eligible employees can ensure they are covered in case of job loss. It is an important aspect of the overall employment landscape in the UAE, providing support and security for workers across various sectors.
