In a recent incident at the popular Saas Fee resort in Switzerland, scores of tourists were left stranded at the top of the mountain due to a mudslide that cut off road access until at least next week. An overnight downpour caused several rivers in the Saas Valley to burst their banks, leading to the closure of the road between Stalden and Saas-Balen. The Valais authorities predicted that the road would remain closed until early next week, leaving about 2,200 tourists, mostly Swiss, stranded at the resort.

To rescue the stranded tourists, helicopter crews from Air Zermatt rescue and helicopter service led the evacuation operation. The helicopters had to be approved for the operation by the Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA). Images broadcasted by public broadcaster RTS showed a long line of people, many dressed in hiking gear, waiting for flights out of the resort. While some tourists were eager to leave, others, especially senior citizens, were not in a hurry to evacuate.

The spokesperson for Air Zermatt was unable to estimate the exact number of people evacuated during the late-afternoon operation. However, despite the challenging situation, the rescue crews were able to coordinate the evacuation efficiently before nightfall. The safety and well-being of the stranded tourists were a top priority for the rescue teams, who worked diligently to ensure everyone’s safe transportation out of the resort.

The swift response from the Valais authorities and rescue teams highlights the importance of preparedness in handling emergency situations, such as natural disasters like mudslides. Helicopter services like Air Zermatt play a crucial role in providing assistance and support during such incidents, ensuring the safety of those affected. The cooperation between local authorities and rescue services was instrumental in managing the evacuation process and ensuring that the stranded tourists were evacuated in a timely and safe manner.

As the road access remained cut off due to the mudslide, the evacuation operation via helicopters was the only viable option for transporting the stranded tourists out of the resort. The approval from the Federal Office of Civil Aviation for the helicopter flights demonstrates the importance of adhering to safety regulations and protocols during emergency situations. Despite the challenges posed by the mudslide, the rescue teams were able to successfully evacuate a significant number of tourists, alleviating the strain on resources and ensuring the well-being of those affected.

Overall, the evacuation operation at the Saas Fee resort in Switzerland was a testament to the resilience and efficiency of the rescue teams and authorities involved. The successful evacuation of the stranded tourists underscores the importance of swift and coordinated response efforts during natural disasters. The collaboration between Air Zermatt, the Valais authorities, and other stakeholders in managing the crisis highlights the significance of preparedness and effective communication in ensuring the safety and well-being of those affected during emergencies.
