U.S. Bancorp, the nation’s fifth-largest bank, recently raised its dividend to 50 cents per share, making it one of the best dividend plays in the banking industry. This marks the 13th consecutive year that the bank has increased its dividend payout, solidifying its reputation as a reliable income stock. In addition, U.S. Bancorp also announced a $5 billion share repurchase program set to begin in 2025, further enhancing shareholder value.

With a dividend yield of 4.48%, U.S. Bancorp’s dividend is higher than the industry average of 3.21%, making it an attractive option for income-focused investors. While other banks may offer slightly higher yields, U.S. Bancorp’s long track record of dividend increases sets it apart from the competition. This stability, combined with its high yield, positions U.S. Bancorp as one of the best large bank dividend stocks currently available.

However, one potential concern is the bank’s relatively high payout ratio of 61.9%, which indicates that U.S. Bancorp is paying out a significant portion of its earnings to fund its dividend. While this ratio is slightly above the industry average of 41%, it is not alarming at this time. Investors should monitor this ratio closely to ensure that U.S. Bancorp is able to maintain its dividend payments in the long term.

In terms of stock performance, U.S. Bancorp has struggled this year, with a modest 1.7% increase in a challenging interest rate environment. However, with interest rates expected to decrease, the bank’s earnings should receive a boost, potentially leading to higher stock prices. Analysts have set a median price target of $49 per share, representing a potential 10% growth from its current price.

Ultimately, U.S. Bancorp’s appeal lies in its strong dividend payout, making it an attractive option for income investors seeking reliable returns. For those looking for a combination of dividend income and capital appreciation, there may be better alternatives available. As always, investors should conduct their own research and consider their individual investment goals before deciding whether U.S. Bancorp stock is a suitable addition to their portfolio.
