Meera Al Mheiri, at the age of 22, has made history by becoming the first Emirati woman to work as a nuclear safety inspector at the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR). Her interest in engineering stemmed from a love for scientific subjects, leading her to major in Mechanical Engineering and Nuclear Engineering at Khalifa University. Despite initially not fully understanding the field of nuclear engineering, her passion for science and a desire to serve her country motivated her to join the UAE’s nuclear program.

Upon graduating as one of the top students, Meera applied for a role at FANR, expressing her interest in dynamic, on-site work to engage directly with the evolving nuclear landscape. Her ambition and enthusiasm landed her the position of a nuclear safety inspector, making her the first Emirati woman in this critical role. Meera felt a tremendous sense of responsibility in being the first woman in this position and focused on upscaling herself quickly to keep up with the experts in the field.

Despite facing challenges during her early experiences, such as fainting on her first site visit due to the intense physical demands of the job, Meera’s resilience and determination helped her overcome these obstacles. She modified her lifestyle to maintain a healthy diet and regular exercise routine to meet the job’s physical demands. Meera’s ability to balance her demanding career with personal interests, such as volunteering and continuous learning, is a testament to her passion and dedication.

In discussing public engagement in the nuclear field, Meera emphasized the importance of transparency and communication. FANR actively conducts awareness sessions and maintains open channels for public concerns to involve the community in the nuclear industry. Meera’s impact extends beyond her role at FANR, as she was appointed as one of the youngest board members of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood and later became a fellow in the National Experts Program.

Her involvement with the Emirates Youth Council and the Supreme Council included strategic oversight and active engagement with youth and policy-making processes, further enhancing her influence on national development. Meera’s journey as the first Emirati woman nuclear safety inspector showcases her leadership, dedication, and commitment to professional growth, setting an example for aspiring women in the field of nuclear engineering.
